Dr. Helene Brenner is a licensed psychologist, director of Women’s Counseling and Psychological Services, speaker and author of I Know I’m in There Somewhere: A Woman’s Guide to Finding Her Inner Voice and Living a Life of Authenticity (Gotham Books, 2003). For more than 25 years, she has been helping women, and men as well, to overcome past conditioning and begin to trust their inner selves to create the lives they truly want.
Dr. Brenner was motivated to write I Know I’m in There Somewhere when she noticed that, among the women she treated…
…there was a difference between the way they thought they should feel and the way they really felt inside.
Many felt chronically dissatisfied with themselves, feeling like they could never measure up to society’s standards and compelled to put everyone else’s wants and needs ahead of their own. Dr. Brenner wanted to write a book that would help women go from tearing themselves down, giving themselves away and boxing themselves in, to living from the wisdom and passion of their authentic selves. She also wanted to write a book that, rather than telling women to “think differently” in order to change, would honor and respect their emotions and harness the power of those emotions to create change that came from their deepest selves.
Since writing I Know I’m in There Somewhere, Helene has conducted workshops throughout the country, including at Omega Institute, Kripalu, the Learning Annex, and the Sacred Circles Conference held at the Washington National Cathedral. Her work has been featured in dozens of magazines, TV and radio shows, including Self, Ladies Home Journal, Fitness, Body and Soul (now Whole Living) and on the Montel Williams Show.
She has also has been a speaker at many business and women’s organizations and company training events. In addition to her individual therapy practice, she offers Inner Voice Coaching as well as teleclasses conducted through Focusing Resources, Inc. She loves to speak and teach people how they can live more authentically and fully from their own voices and inner strengths.
Dr. Brenner was born in New York City and grew up in Middletown, New York. After receiving her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Denver and doing her internship at the VA Medical Center and working in a clinical practice in northern New Jersey, she has made her home in Maryland for the past 20 years, practicing in Frederick and Montgomery County. Her work integrates many new therapeutic approaches that have been shown to be effective, including Focusing, a gentle yet powerful mind-body process that helps people access their deepest and wisest self. Besides Focusing, she has incorporated EMDR, somatic and mind-body therapy, and her own “inner-voice” work, as described in I Know I’m in There Somewhere.
She is the mother of two daughters and has been married for more than 30 years to her husband, fellow therapist Larry Letich. In her spare time she loves walking along beaches and in nature, having travel adventures, and improvisational and ballroom dancing, especially the rhumba and west coast swing.
