Focusing is simply the most powerful (yet totally gentle!) mind-body self-help and self-awareness technique I have ever found. Developed in the 1970s by psychologist Dr. Eugene Gendlin at the University of Chicago, it has been taught to hundreds of thousands of people in 43 countries around the world. It is a way of connecting to your own inner self to find the answers you need.

Focusing has now been a part of my life for 25 years, and it has been so helpful to me in so many ways, I can’t imagine life without it.

Apart from therapy I teach Focusing in daylong and weekend workshops. I also offer telecourses on how to use Focusing on various problems and issues, as well as telecourses on Focusing-Oriented Therapy to therapists and other healing professionals through Focusing Resources Inc. Finally, I offer one-on-one Focusing sessions to experienced Focusers.

I hope I have the opportunity to introduce you to Focusing. Everyone I know who has learned it well and uses it regularly has been helped immeasurably.

Focusing-Oriented Therapy

The concept of helping you to listen within and let the messages from your own inner self come through is central to the kind of therapy I do, which is why I call myself a Focusing-Oriented Therapist.

Focusing-Oriented Therapy is not just about “fixing a problem,” although it does that very effectively. It’s about helping you experience a whole new relationship with yourself—a relationship based on a profound acceptance of and compassion toward all aspects of yourself, and trust in the power and wisdom of your own inner self to guide you. I deeply believe that the most effective way to meet all of the enormous challenges of life and keep thriving and growing is not by fighting or “fixing” ourselves, but by learning to listen to the messages are already present in our own minds and bodies, just waiting for us to hear them.
