Can YOU Get Off The Merry Go Round?

Can you get off the merry-go-round?Thank goodness it’s finally Spring here in Maryland. While we didn’t get the record-breaking snowfalls that pummeled New York and New England, this past February and March were so cold, the blossoms came out a full two weeks later than usual. But now the blossoms are in full bloom, the grass and flowers are coming up, and the leaves on the trees are coming in. It’s another reminder of one of life’s most important lessons: Life is always changing. So many things that feel permanent and immutable turn out not to be. There is always something new.

Yet at the same time, doesn’t it sometimes feel as though, in the words of 19th century French novelist Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr, plus ca change, plus c’est la meme chose: “the more things change, the more they stay the same”? The seasons go round and round, yet sometimes it can feel as though we think the same thoughts, feel the same feelings, and struggle with the same problems year after year after year.

One of the (many) things I love about the mind-body self-awareness process known as Focusing is that it seems to me to be one of the best ways to be freed of those old patterns – ironically, not by fighting them, but by paying that special, caring, compassionate attention to them that Focusing brings.

2015 has brought to fruition one of my longstanding dreams: To launch the Greater Washington Center for Focusing and Focusing-Oriented Therapy ( Together with my husband and colleague Larry Letich, we’ve started a Focusing-Oriented Therapy (FOT) training programs with eight wonderful therapists so far.

Then on Saturday and Sunday May 2nd and 3rd, we’ll be holding a weekend teaching beginning Focusing in our Frederick, Md. office. If you’ve never learned Focusing before, or you know someone whom you’d like to share Focusing with, click here and sign up. We’d love to see you there!

Finally, for those who already know Focusing, I will be offering a five-week telecourse with Focusing Resources called The Jewel in the Core. This telecourse, held Tuesdays at 12:00 Eastern time starting May 5th will be on those recurring patterns – those stuck themes – those situations in your life and places inside of you that, even though you’ve focused on them many times before, seem to return again and again. Do you have an issue like that? Then come to The Jewel in the Core, and we will work together to unlock the “jewel” – the life-giving message and purpose – in the “core” of a recurring issue that occurs over and over in your life.

And we’ll do more than that. Through my own experiences and those of my clients, I’ve come to believe that recurring themes remain locked in place not only because they once served a useful purpose, but because our nervous systems become “primed” to pick up information that confirms the things we learned earlier in life and block out information that might contradict it. Incredible changes can occur when we start to allow the possibility that we don’t see the whole picture – there are already more possibilities, right within our reach, than we’ve been able to see before. Learn more about it and register here.

I hope to hear from you — and may the rest of your Spring be full of warm days and wonderful, vibrant new growth!

For Therapists:

Would you like the work you do with your clients to be deeper, more intimate and immediate, more alive and “in flow”? Would you like to create and capture more moments of inner connection and change?

The beauty of Focusing-oriented therapy (FOT) is that it does not revolve around content. It revolves around the experiential process that is occurring within the client moment to moment in therapy, and the responses that we as the therapist give to this process. Come to this class to learn how to exquisitely tune to what is going on moment-to-moment, and how to use yourself as an instrument that is perfectly attuned to bringing out the healing capacities implicit within the ebb-and-flow of every single therapy session.

Focusing is such a fantastic process for maintaining your connection to your Inner Voice. But if you’re a focuser, you’ve probably noticed that the times when you most need it are often the very times you’re least likely to do it. I’m talking about those times when you have so much going on, you barely have time to breathe, much less Focus!

That’s when “Focusing on the Fly” can really come in handy. In this five-week telecourse, I share techniques that I developed and used myself  back when my kids were still little but my practice was no less busy than it is today. I needed some quick ways to stay in touch with what I really felt and wanted. even if the only time I ever stopped was at a red light.

I hope you join me for five Tuesdays in the Fall to learn ways to quickly access your inner wisdom and find a place of inner calm and clarity whenever you need it.

If you’d like to learn a bit more, I’ll be giving a free introductory mini-class on Tuesday Sept. 16th.
